Internet Archive had removed the recordings from its site after the Grateful Dead's business managers complained recently. The move caused an uproar among the band's fans. Thousands signed an online petition condemning the band and pledging to boycott all Grateful Dead merchandise. The crackdown appeared to be a sudden reversal by the band, which reportedly had long approved of fans trading homemade concert tapes.

You don't have to fight people to get the answers you are looking for...

You show up here, start making surly demands, and are surprised when people don't lay all the Wall of Sound SBD's at your feet.

If you had just approached this query with humble patience then you would have got your answer without having to call half the posters idiots and cunts. But you know, I'm getting the impression you enjoy that sort of thing.

"Some folks look for answers, others look for fights. "

Be Nice.

"i am usually the smartest person in the room"

Well excuse me, I must have been fooled by your obvious mastery of the English language. Then again, it could've been your blatant negativity and/or you propensity to resort to pejorative.

" dont you call me boy you cunt "

So, you're not a boy(male child), but you do posess a rather unfriendly attitude. OK, don't you call me a "cunt" bitch

"go fuck yourself you piece of shit. do not think you are gonna get away with talking to me that way you motherfucker.
NOW I DID NOT COME IN HERE AND START CURSING AT PEOPLE BUT NOW YOU HAVE PISSED ME OFF YOU LITTLE FUCK.

you little coward pos. go fuck youself you little rodent "

I think "high flow" said it best, "Your true colors are beautiful."

"you seem like you might have a clue so i will respond:"

I hate to burst your bubble but ofttimes I don't even have a suspicion, much less a clue.

"1) i came in "the door" many many years ago. it is not a competition but trust me"

I "got on the bus" many years ago, but "came in the door" very recently(in the current decade). If it it truly isn't a competition, why did you make a point of the age and number of times seeing the band of those who responded to your post in what you deemed to be a negative fashion. Are you really surprised that you received negative responses when your first post here was laced with negativity?

"2) i was stating an observation. the negativity is rooted in dimwits having internet access coupled with a clogged "brain" to keyboard filter. translation - any idiot who can read can post here"

I see your point.

"i have had to deal with morons responding to my post."

Once again, your point is well taken. But, rest assured that you are not alone in that predicament.

Methinks it is time to reiterate a previous statement and then back slowly out he door.

"I don't understand your disappointment. But if your feelings about The Archive are that negative, the door does swing both ways. Don't let it hit ya' where the good Lord split ya'."

"And, in the final analysis, smartass is a judgment call. One man's "smartass" is anther's "satirical humor".

Peace to you, my brother."

Of course, I suspect you will wholeheartedly agree with Cliff Hucker's opinion of me. He once said, "I don't think I have ever encountered anyone as self-righteous, sanctimonious, or pious as yourself!"

I don't purchase GD merchandise because I am a broke ass college student. I listen to the GD because I can get excellent recordings of beautiful music online for free and I don't feel like I'm stealing as I would with many other bands.

I have gone to The Dead and Furthur so there we have it - the taping culture promoting ticket sales.

"the taping culture promoting ticket sales."

This is the motivation for so many bands these days. "The Machine" which was Record Studios dropping payola is a DJ's lap in exchange for air-time is gone. So, a manager/producer can no longer run a hero up the pop-charts. Now the mega-label/media Ogres hand-pick "artists" for cuteness and then sledge-hammer the lip-synched music into the heads of clueless, young sheeple.

Thank god for the bands who make their music public here at LMA. Young people(the cunts who ruined Jonathan's scene) actually have a chance to discover honest music.

Indeed, there is a large counter-current to this promotional method in the form of independent record labels and bands allowing taping, but just turn on the radio - the machine is still operational.. it's just not making as much money as it used to.

"Now the mega-label/media Ogres hand-pick "artists" for cuteness and then sledge-hammer the lip-synched music into the heads of clueless, young sheeple."

I am aware that this is happening now, and has been happening as long as I've been aware (mid-90s), but isn't this the very same procedure that has been in place since the 50s?

Sure, for a while, honestly good musicians were able to break through into the pop world, but hasn't this hand-picked entertainer idol bullshit been going on for quite some time?

Thankfully, sound recording technology is now empowering the masses instead of the industry bosses with money to throw around. These days anyone who can afford a laptop, a MIDI adapter, some microphones, etc. is a producer and can run a mobile studio.

Agreed, these tactics are not new. Perhaps the percentage of "music" people on the production/distribution side back then was greater? As a result, the labels were more discriminating about what they threw against the wall. Talent seems to be less a factor in choosing recording stars these days. I think all the fake singing we see proves that.

As for radio, it's biz as usual. Take the old stuff pay royalties and sell some ads. The new stuff is, by design, ever-changing. The sheer numbers of "pop-stars" is crazy. More flashes in the pan, fewer performers who last.

Of course all of this comes from a deadhead who likes electric guitars and soulful, overweight back-up singers. Odds are I'm talkin' outta my dark hollow.

All the AUDs are, and I didn't click your link, since if it correctly listed ALL the AUDs, it would take FOREVER to load.

Try 6-14-68, the GREATEST show ever, and this will cure your need for further discussion...truly.

Poor AUD, unfortunately, so then go to 8-6-71, and you'll find one that Phil Lesh thought good enough to release on his own "Phil Zone" CD...

Ah, well, then, you're shit out of luck, as they say...but I gather you've fig'd that out by now. Again, I still don't know that it was the "right" move by the band members (they did NOT agree on it, BTW, as I've heard it), but it was their "right".

In the "for what it's worth" category, many of the folks that responded to you have either been over this so many times they are sick of it, have diff views than the one I just espoused, or took offense at a perception of "attitude" on your part...they are in general, nice folks, if that means anything at this point...Dunno.

hey William, been thinking about whether or not this was the "right" decision

think i assumed it was a disaster because within a year they wound up laying off staff they helped carry for the previous 10 years (believe Phil made a statement in early 05 that GD was losing 100 large a month, mostly due to payroll?)

giving up intellectual rights for 10 years couldn't have been an easy decision either

if they had turned things around financially, then it wouldn't have made sense to sell out to Rhino...but i suppose it could have been for any number of reasons, the reasons they gave at the time of announcing the deal are vague (Maybe now that we aren't doing business together anymore we can start playing music together again." - Mickey)

i think Bob was hoodwinked by management with the "royalties" red herring and the fact he took the boycott personally shows he has very poor business sense at best...and Bill's statement last summer that the Archive is exploiting the collection by selling commercial advertising indicates a complete lack of basic understanding

Phil seemed to be the only who had a handle on the situation, ironically, the reason why he was excluded...at least the deal with Rhino meant he didn't have to worry about the other 3 going behind his back anymore

i don't think this is a dead horse, not by a long shot...this issue leads straight to the question as to how artists are to be compensated for their efforts in these cyber-times...unfortunately no one (incl self) has any ready answers

I think your timeline is off. The boards were pulled in November 2005 but the layoffs began in 2003 and were done by 2005. Ramrod died in May 2006 and was laid off the previous year according to the obits. So the decision could not have effected the business, it was already dead.

I suspect that Rhino, who already had the deal done by then requested the removal to be done as a means to protect their investment and after the initial response to the complete removal of all music, the band was able to secure the current compromise which in many ways fits with their initial philosophy. All the auds are still here, even from commercially released shows. If you read the thesis on taping and the dead that was posted earlier today (in the embalming the dead thread) it seems to suggest that the sbds were not at least initially meant to be distributed. People in the organization would give them out with "do not distribute" written on them and of course they were distributed.

yes, the layoffs were ongoing, i could be wrong, but i understood the Rhino deal resulted in the final blow...they still retained staff during 06 either involved with or subsidized by the DL/DP/etc series...also, the boycott included the merchandise division as well as Bob's band (and to a lesser extent P&F's)

the aud's are still here because they provide free promo...don't believe the band could economically nor legally market them anyways, and not w/o permission/compensation from/to the tapers (nor the tapers w/o permission/compensation from/to the band) interesting to see what kind of re-marriage would transpire between band/tapers if Rhino entertained releasing matrices (?)

the sbd issue is even murkier, not denying GD might have preferred greater restriction, but i don't think there is much doubt that sbd trading also contributed to free promo, perhaps even more so than the aud's...the difference is whether or not a fan is going to feel it is worth paying for the official sbd upgrade...then again, many people here prefer aud's, so in a sense the aud's are also a threat to sales

there may very have been some preliminary discussions/memos of understanding with the labels they were courting, or at least some forethought in that regard, if so, they never let on

in any case, it's all out there anyways, if GD gained some consideration by selling Rhino the Brooklyn Bridge through "artificial" restriction of the sbd's then kudos to them...good luck trying to fish in the fans though :)

I agree regarding the promo and that while the band may not have initially wanted the sbds to get out they did nothing to stop it including not re-acquiring the bettyboards when they were available. I think giving fans access to the music, including the sbds worked out well for the band, however there is something that is very different about this site compared to all others. bt sites, vines even individuals sharing hard drives are all forms of sharing. They all are much closer to how many of us got our first tapes and returned the favor to others. This place is a one-stop all you can consume for free 24/7/365 buffet table and completely changes the equation. I actually think the current situation here is pretty fair with the notable exception of pulling the complete shows that have one or two songs released on a compilation disc (Steppin' Out) or worse something released on a Road Trips bonus disc that is not even available!! If you want sbds there are plenty of options to get them, but you'll have to share. If you're cool with auds, then grab a fork and a knife and dig in right here.

Well said--and as I have been poorly articulating in my many posts, we just don't know (biz: good for biz? poor for biz? how much biz are we talking bout anyhow?). Never had a problem with them making one decision or another, but academically speaking wanted to ask "is it best?" Clearly, Phil and others had differing views, and it is fine for them, like all of us, to stumble forward and see what shakes out...and we can keep talking about it meanwhile.

try bt.etree.org; if you search for specific years (e.g. "1973") it will give you a list of torrents from that year. If the torrent's called "1973 project part [x]" then you should try to grab all of those to get the complete recordings from that year. I'm in the process of rebuilding my complete 1974 (my hard drive recently died and i lost my entire collection).

You can call me an idiot (reference to your comment below) and in some respects it would be true. But in this room you are certainly not the smartest. It is unclear whether all your yammering away regarding the subject of soundboard availability is still the point that preoccupies you. You come off as yet another who makes an appearance under the guise of seeking, but really in some strange manner just looking for a fight. But yes – we can only “d/l” audience versions of GD shows here.

Open your eyes – seek and you shall find. Getting what you want might take a bit of work on your end, but if your desires are really to obtain the music, then stop wasting your energy – and ours – and listen to what is being laid out for you. Steel trap indeed.

And while you are in the process of figuring it all out, keep your own foul mouth shut.

No need to be nasty WT. It just felt like and "in" joke that had passed. I keep see you referencing it. I would look it up but for some reason I can't see you post history. Either it's too large or you are in fact a PM and have special powers... I'm not nearly as intense ass my writing style make me sound.... have a nice one.

No sweat--didn't know if you were upset or not...BTW, while "looking" at the big board, just click on my name next to one of my posts, and it'll take a min or so (too many posts!), but then you can see them all...however, if you really want to know the "history" it's that when Dire was annointed "Burger King", a la, "King of the Forum" by currently MIA posters, someone nominated me "Prime Minister" as we all seemed to think Rob's gubermint was better (har, har) than ours...and then, folks started using it. You are fundamentally right though, I defn "accepted" it...

Ha! You're right! I just tried, and it took forever, then stopped!

I suppose that means I must really be the PM (and note, MS, I didn't mention you're role in this--that StSt person named you if I recall), or something worse...

CK that Hook message--things on the way!

I was not refering to you
so you are saying that a stream is entered in as download. What is weird is that there are review comments from users saying they are in the process of "downloading the show" as they write their comment. I can only find a stream for the show they are claiming to be downloading. And yes it was written in 2010.
that is why i thought i might be missing something from a user standpoint kind of way

Hmm, that is odd; I assumed it was a "hold over" from the old system (and it is true, stream = DL # now adays)...I will not say more than this, but it could also mean your reviewer is doing something of a very diff nature and calling it "DL'ing"...Sorry--cryptic for a reason.

I was just joking--I assumed you weren't ref'ing to me as a scumbag.

Hmmmmm. Doubtful.

Yawn. I have "circa" 100 Thousand Tons of SBDs. From every year. I have SBDs of shows the Dead never did. I have SBDs of shows the Dead were going to do in 2006.

My SBDs from '73 and '74 water my garden and take my dog for a walk. My '77 shows cut the lawn. My '86 shows are in the compost pile.

They are also all etched on palladium and gold CDs. My '68 SBDs are stored in Fort Knox and could be used to restore the US to the gold standard - Bretton Woods be damned.

Countless is sorta like infinite. 2318 is not countless, it is finite. So even if you saw them all we can count that high. So much for being the smartest in the room. See the above post wrt Jethro and Sponge Bob.

Biggest drama queen perhaps.

You are what happens when someone leaves the douchebag back flow preventer valve open.

You are also a sad and angry troll and as such this is the last food you will ever get from me. Not that that matters much, because I am just a punk, 48, not 20 though.

Dude North - you could show up on the front steps of the Forum pissing light sweet crude and shitting 5 ounce gold bars on demand and I wouldn't piss on your head if your eyebrows were on fire.

PM Tell - do I have to go to time out now?

oh and by the way, you are a genius. thanks for everything.

the guy who's been posting downloading instructions has done this in many, many reviews and each time a new review comes in, we see it on the main page. so yes, the awareness is there and this is old news.

thanks for being a complete sadistic moron. you are so fucking great and noble for exposing all this illegal activity. for what? to prove to us in the forum how brilliant you are?

at least for me, it's a don't ask, don't tell policy, trying to keep the integrity of the site alive.

it appears to are one of the stupider people i have encountered here. why? becuase you cannot read. or if you can read the words on the page, they do not transcribe into meaningful information that your, and i say this with a pound of salt, your "brain" can process.
translation - I HAVE EVERY SHOW I WANT, YOU WASTE OF SPERM. i was looking for backups. I have more shows than stupid things you have said in your life which is quite a lot i am sure
anyway - see where your stupidity gets you now.

I'll bet he's the jackass that sold me the illegal boot's, I can see a t-shirt or somthing , but there music? Jesus H. Christ what do people want? ( besides a free ride) Can you imagine the hell you would raise if you walked into a record store and see YOUR music on the shelf with out you getting paid for it? Not saying it happened to them, but I unknowingly bought illegals. Could you put a real number on the money the GD has lost from heads selling and not trading?

looking ahead in this thread, however, it doesn't look like a very promising discussion ...

Don't sweat it; but kind of you to say so...yes, it is a complex subject, and I do like DeadPol and his college writing research efforts turning up the kind of academic dialogue showing that there are two sides to the debate (this again does NOT mean the band doesn't have the right to do whatever they want, NOR that WE are not selfish brats [I take as a given I am], but more to the interesting notion of whether these moves are "good biz" actions, or not, etc., etc., etc...always fun to discuss, never fun to just piss and moan about it, IMHO.).

I mean to re-read that thread 'cus I had to hastily skim. Clearly I do not actually know what I'm talking about though I have lots of thoughts on the matter LOL.

It occurred to me later that it's too harsh to say deadheads want all the music free. It seems more like, most of them want all the music free AND they want to pay for it, too. Quite a phenomenon.
